Awards success for Bentley in Yorkshire and Humber

JN Bentley, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley have enjoyed a successful night at the prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) Awards in Yorkshire and Humber.

The night saw JN Bentley, MMB and JBA Bentley pick up five prizes at a ceremony held in the grand surroundings of the National Railway Museum in York.

MMB’s scheme at Butterley Impounding Reservoir at Marsden, West Yorkshire, won the Smeaton Award for projects greater than £500,000 and less than £5m.

The project incorporates significant investment to ensure that the only Grade II listed spillway in the United Kingdom, continues to guarantee the safety of the residents of Marsden and beyond, whilst trying to maintain its legacy long into the future.

Mark Duquemin, ICE Awards Secretary for Yorkshire and Humber, said, “The Butterley spillway project successfully delivered a sensitive upgrade of a listed structure making it fit for the 21st century. The judges were impressed, in particular, by the project team’s approach to health and safety, collaborative design and construction.”

MMB Operations Manager Chris Wilcock told us, “The award is gratification for the effort and dedication shown by the team involved with Butterley.

“It is testament for facing issues head on as a team, and for maintaining outstanding standards of health and safety throughout.”

MMB’s project replacing all the corroded metalwork within the valve towers at Digley Reservoir was awarded a Certificate of Excellence, and projects at Flamborough Head, where the pumping station was relocated, and JBA Bentley’s Chantry Cottages scheme, where stabilisation improvements were made to 1km of flood embankment, were both highly commended.

Finally, JN Bentley Project Leader Nasar Adam won the New Ambassador Award for his work to engage students in civil engineering and other STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) subjects.

Nasar said, “As an ICE Ambassador, I have been given the opportunity to help give back to local schools.  It’s a great feeling when you can see the students engaging with the subjects and beginning to understand what is involved with being an engineer.”
