JN Bentley achieves ‘Platinum’ status

Civil engineering and construction company JN Bentley has achieved ‘platinum’ status for environmental management and performance in Business in the Community’s (BITC) Environment Index 2016.

A score of 96% places the business alongside the very top performing companies and sees JN Bentley achieve ‘platinum’ status for the second consecutive year.


The Environment Index is a detailed environmental assessment that allows firms to compare environmental performance and management against other organisations within their industry and beyond.

The score is based on JN Bentley’s performance across five categories: Corporate Strategy, Integration, Disclosure, Performance and Management.

Across three of the five categories JN Bentley scored 100%, and bettered the sector average on all five measures.

Achieving a platinum status for the second year in a row is evidence of JN Bentley’s on-going commitment to maintain the highest environmental standards.

Our company vision is to achieve zero environmental incidents across all projects and premises. The 2016 Environmental Index result provides assurances that our efforts to achieve this vision are being successful.

JN Bentley is presented with a National Payroll Giving Award

Civil engineering and construction company JN Bentley has been awarded a National Payroll Giving ‘Silver Award’ for a commitment to promoting payroll giving over the last twelve months.

Payroll Giving is a flexible scheme which allows anyone who pays UK income tax to give regularly and on a tax free basis to charities and good causes of their choice.


The Silver Award recognises JN Bentley as an organisation that is committed to fostering a culture of philanthropy and committed giving in the workplace.

In 2015, our employees contributed £3910 to UK charities through the Payroll Giving Scheme, with many opting to continue to donate through the scheme in 2016.

Payroll Giving is beneficial to the employee because donations are deducted before tax so each £1 donated only costs the employee 80p (or 60p for higher rate tax payers).

It is also beneficial to charities because they receive the total donation including tax without having to reclaim tax at a later date.

This initiative is just one small part of JN Bentley’s wider Corporate Responsibility Programme. In 2015, with the help of our employees, we raised a total of £99,082 for charity.

JN Bentley attends launch of Green Construction Board’s new standard on carbon management in infrastructure

JN Bentley has attended the launch of a new standard that has been developed to encourage a consistent approach to the management of carbon in infrastructure.

PAS (Publicly Available Specification) 2080 was developed by the Construction Leadership Council’s Green Construction Board and lays out the components and principles of a carbon management system and the requirements of the whole value chain.

As a member of the Green Construction Board’s Infrastructure Working Group, JN Bentley has played its part in the development of the PAS and its accompanying guidance document.

JN Bentley has a strong track record of making savings for clients; reducing embodied carbon is one such way of achieving these savings.

The launch of the PAS gave us opportunity to report back on some of our original carbon-reducing commitments, made when signing the Infrastructure Carbon Review (ICR) in 2014. The ICR is a joint initiative to reduce carbon in infrastructure – over 50 major organisations have now signed up.

Upon launching the PAS, Skills Minister and Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council, Nick Boles, said, “Today I’ve heard about the great strides being made by businesses in driving forward the pledges from the Infrastructure Carbon Review.

“Business has cottoned on to how saving carbon, saves costs. The launch of the infrastructure standard provides a tool to enable industry to take the next step and I encourage them to do just that.”

JN Bentley launches Annual Review

JN Bentley has published its latest Annual Review.

The Review provides a snapshot of projects from across the business, including those delivered by our joint venture companies Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley (JBA-B).

It also covers some of the work being done in important areas such as health, safety, quality and environmental management, training and development, wellbeing, and community.

The Review also celebrates successes from 2015, including the conclusion of our AMP6 bids with clients in the water sector, all of which heralds an exciting time for the business.

JN Bentley employees qualify as Engineering Technicians

Two JN Bentley employees have earned the right to add the letters ‘EngTech TMICE’ to their names after qualifying as professional Engineering Technicians with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

JP Smyth and Ryan Walters worked hard to meet the criteria of the qualification whilst maintaining their day-to-day duties as Site Agent and Site Engineer, respectively.

They worked through the various EngTech modules, meeting frequently with their mentors, JP with Project Leader Stella Hughes, and Ryan with Operations Manager Neil Harrison.

The final test came in the form of an interview in front of a panel of industry experts, who signed-off their hard work.

In 2014, JP became the first employee to pass our Civil Engineering Development Programme – and Ryan is now well on the way to completing the programme too.

Speaking to us, Neil Harrison cited JN Bentley’s Development Scheme as having been key to both JP and Ryan achieving the EngTech registration.

“Ryan and JP’s success shows that the training and mentoring on offer through our own Civil Engineering Development Programme has many benefits.

“It’s not only helped Ryan and JP develop the skills we demand of them as Bentley engineers, it has helped them achieve external qualifications and professional memberships like the EngTech too.”

JN Bentley apprentices 2012-14

JN Bentley Apprentices 2012-14 – Our apprentices receive both practical training, together with on-site training and assessment to gain an NVQ Qualification in General Construction Operations.

For 2015 JN Bentley is re-opening the programme and is looking for potential applicants to form a small group of apprentices in the following locations:

Midlands: Telford, Owestry, & Wrexham
Yorkshire: Barnsley, Keighley, Otley, Ripon, Skipton, Thirsk, Wakefield and Wetherby
North East: Darlington and Durham
North West: Lancaster, Preston & Sale

Apprentices can be any age and do not need any previous experience of working in construction. All we ask is that you have a genuine interest in working in the construction industry and are prepared to work hard to learn the skills you will need to work on sites safely.

JBA Bentley opens new offices in Peterborough

Environmental design, engineering and construction company JBA Bentley has opened new offices in Peterborough.

Situated in Minerva Business Park, the new office will act as a permanent location from which to deliver our Asset Refurbishment Programme of Works (ARPoW) with the Environment Agency (EA).

The office is positioned centrally within the works area and is only 15 minutes’ walk from the EA’s regional head office.

Under the ARPoW we are delivering multiple schemes in the Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire regions. Works include dredging, structure repairs, earthworks and bridges, and each scheme is worth between £20k and £1m.

The framework makes up a significant amount of our annual workload with the EA, which now stretches across England and Wales.

Operations Manager Ian Austin said, “The opening of our second JBA Bentley office represents an important step for the business as we continue our development under the Environment Agency’s Water and Environmental Management (WEM) Framework.”
