Engineering and construction company JN Bentley has received recognition in four categories at Northumbrian Water Group’s (NWG) GEM Awards.
The awards mean that JN Bentley has now been successful in every year since the GEM – or Going the Extra Mile – Awards were launched in 2012.
Presented by NWG Chief Executive Heidi Mottram, the awards recognise excellent performances from teams and individuals working on projects across the NWG regions.
Winner – Individual Contribution Award
JN Bentley’s first success came in the Individual Contribution Award, where Project Leader and Process Engineer Helen Frost (pictured below) was recognised for her attitude and effort in delivering successful projects year-after-year.

Helen’s outstanding technical knowledge and ability to motivate and enthuse others ensured our Minor Works Programme with NWG not only resolved many issues for the client in a timely and efficient manner, but also led to the development of some highly productive and focused teams.
Jonny Belmont, NWG Project Manager said, “Helen is a very knowledgeable, adaptable, customer focused project manager.
“She approaches the issues we table with an open mind, looking for best business outcomes rather than construction project opportunities. She has been a vital cog in the STW Minor Works collaborative team.”
Last year Helen also scooped the monthly Be Recognised prize at JN Bentley, our internal employee recognition initiative.
Winner – Environmental & Sustainability Category
JN Bentley’s second triumph was in the Environmental & Sustainability Category, where our project constructing a new outfall at Warden was named winner.

Our team really understood the potential environmental challenges and impacts presented by the scheme and implemented the strictest management controls to minimise any impact.
The project design adopted a pre-cast solution which meant the offsite manufacture reduced the embodied carbon in the solution.
JN Bentley was also named as finalists in both the Health & Safety Excellence and Programme of the Year categories.
This recognition builds on our CECA North East H&S Company of the Year Award, which was presented to JN Bentley in November. This was the sixth time in eight years that JN Bentley has won the award.
Operations Manager in the North East, Colin Nichol, commented, “It is great to see our people and projects recognised by the client in this way. I know that everyone involved put in a tremendous amount of work into making them successful.
“It is vital that we continue to work closely with our client and the supply chain to find ever safer, innovative and cost-effective ways of working that will help differentiate JN Bentley from the competition for years to come.”
